Adjunctive Therapy
Moxibustion
Moxibustion consists of the burning of the herb known as mugwort or artesmisia annua. Moxa administers a warm, nourishing heat to promote circulation and blood flow to an area of the body. We also use moxibustion in the treatment to assist in turning babies in the breech presentation.
Cupping
It would be easiest to describe cupping as a form of massage but really it goes beyond that and does what massage cannot. Cupping suctions an area of large musculature (commonly the muscles on the back) to pull and stretch the muscle allowing fresh oxygenated blood to flow back into where it was previously restricted. Cupping also allows for toxins to be pulled from superficial muscle layers; extremely effective for those suffering from environmental toxins especially smoke.
Cups are traditionally administered by starving the cup of oxygen with fire and then quickly applied to the skin so instead of the cup grabbing the oxygen, it pulls the muscle into the cup. We, however, use modern cups that have a suction pump. No fire involved.
Similar to cupping we also use a technique called guasha that works deep into sore, tight, imbalanced muscle with none other than a Chinese soup spoon.
Tuina
A form of massage similar to acupressure, tuina is best described as medical massage used only for a clear purpose to release muscle tension and/or relieve pain. It is always used in conjunction with acupuncture, we do not provide treatments involving only tuina, acupressure or massage. Please see the referrals page if you are searching for a great massage therapist.
